The Story Begins With You!

At the end of two weeks of promotion the book collection looks like this. Pretty good going when the promotion was made in schools and colleges.
The outpouring kindness of the contributors always warms my heart, So many schools, colleges allowed us to set up a drop box and do campaign in their premises. Many of our volunteers did not hesitate to do a campaign in their apartments and gather hand full of books for children. It is amazing how it all balances out for children in need!

Well we are still short of target books this year.

As a part of reading sessions, designed to inspire kids to spend time reading that help develop the critical thinking, vocabulary and language skills a pre-readers needs, we need to accommodate them enough quality books.

And that is why we encourage any size of contribution, new or gently used books even if it is just one book!
Imagine the possibilities - Donate new or gently used books and imagine how far a passion for reading could take a child.

Combining the joy of reading with the power of helping others.

We need your help!

Here's what you have to do: Support our Book Collection Drive

Do you have a stock of books not being used anymore, stowed away in some corner of your home? Donate these books for a noble cause, and support our book collection drive.

As a part of our effort to enable every kid to read, we started ‘MyLibrary’ in each of our schools, making books available for children along with regular fun activities. Kids select the books according to their interests. They feel empowered and renewed, and they begin to see new possibilities.

Since its launch in 2011, we established 3 libraries in 3 schools with 1500 books and this initiative has continued to expand, develop new resources, conducting regular reading activities, encourage children to read a wide variety of books and reinforce them to renew their reading spirits.

Where do we get books from?
We collect books from a variety of sources like colleges, schools, corporate teams and individuals who are the important partners in our work to help children discover the joy of reading.

Donate now
We are now associating with respective colleges of the volunteers with Sahaya in Hyderabad and establishing Book collection boxes in their college premises. It would help collect a good number of books by end of this drive.

MY LIBRARY - The transition from being unable to being able to read

It's no secret that children who grow up with a love of books will be more successful in school. The goal is to make the library a familiar environment so that students grow up knowing how to use the library and feeling like the library is a great place to be. If our students can be inspired by the excitement of finding knowledge and by works of the imagination, they are likely to benefit from these vital elements of personal development throughout their lives, both enriching themselves and enhancing their contribution to society.

“My Library” should help to build the linguistic skills needed for evolving competencies in telling, imagining, understanding, reading, and being a social person.
Rupali, 9th C from ZPHS Kukatpally stated that “ My Library, will help me to learn my favorite Science experiments and also English, I have seen a good number of collection in my library, I will keep my library clean and tidy"
Likewise, we can easily identify what are the possibilities that can be adopted by the students using My Library and below are few

  • Good communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to initiate and participation in Team Work
  • Eagerness learn new skills and develop professionally

These findings underscore the important position the library plays in the reading achievement of children who lack access to books and other reading materials in their daily lives.

We thank our subscribers and contributors towards My Library.

Vibrant and full of colorful hope through books

Our logo design incorporates a rainbow, Clouds, and a Book. Each 3 aspects of the design represent small parts of our dream Library for children.

Rainbows always stand for hope. Everyone can relate to the rainbow because it's in nature. It's rare, but when it appears everyone can see it. This simplicity and rareness would comprise curiosity, a Joy for Children through Sahaya.

Clouds are symbol of imagination, creativity, and also inspiration. We sow seeds of inspiration in these books have motivated children to follow their dreams and achieve their potential.

Books - There are many little ways to enlarge child's world. Giving kids the Joy of reading is best of all. Every time we open a book, we discover something new – a beautiful story or a fairy-tale, the strange and wonderful habits of animals, the mysterious world of science, and the customs of people who live in a far-distant country.  And every time we open a book, kids learn something new – learn numbers and letters, colors and shapes, poetry and songs.

Books are, quite simply, windows on the world!
A library is a place to read and to enjoy and celebrate books.

Every support, big or small, is a rainbow of hope.
You can choose to be a part of spreading the Joy.

Donate books. Enlighten lives. Ignite Minds.

Giving kids the joy of reading

Sir Isaac Newton was apparently sitting under an apple tree when his theory of gravitation came to him.

Team Sahaya was sitting under a tree in school, reading once a week to local children who had no storybooks, when the need for library struck us.Children need to read. They need to have access to books.
They need to have a library, Sahaya realized.

Sahaya is well into the planning and execution stages for expanding library in schools we adopted.

The Joy of Reading

Every time we open a book, we discover something new – a beautiful story or a fairy-tale, the strange and wonderful habits of animals, the mysterious world of science, and the customs of people who live in a far-distant country.  And every time we open a book, we learn something new – we learn numbers and letters, colors and shapes, poetry and songs.  Books are, quite simply, windows on the world!  A library is a place to read and to enjoy and celebrate books.

What is a 'My Library'?
A 'My Library' is a place where there are books, children and committed and enthusiastic volunteers of sahaya to assist the children to develop their reading skills. 'My Library' is a place where each and every child feel its his/her own library.

Other libraries and My Library, what is the difference?

When it come to a other library, they usually for those who know how to read and they are seeking information on a specific topic, or a certain kind of fiction book to read.

Young children may not be able to read so they need to be attracted to the library and, whenever possible, assisted with their reading skills.  Children need to feel comfortable in a library setting and should be gently encouraged to  participate in the activities offered.  Our volunteers will play an interactive role with the children.   It is a very demanding job, but also a very rewarding one.

Few days left for giving kids the joy of reading..

Come donate one to the Sahaya Societies Book donation this year, and you could make this children's day a very special one for Kids..

Here starts the book-e treet....

I hitched a ride with dharani n sreeram, all set to carry out books from all places to segregate them and I can safely say that we did it till  last night. We were able to manage to get 100's of various category books and around 150 dictionaries to launch a mini library today. As per plan dharani dropped me at ZPHS Shamshiguda on time along with books. As I reached n walked inside to be greeted by the children and after the usual “hello’s” and “hi’s” the children settled down in the ground where the Flag hosting was supposed.
By 8.30 Flag hosting program was started followed by HM sir's speech later followed by Chief guests speech. Which later followed by few nice  speeches and songs sung by kids interestingly in English n Hindi as well. Children showcase their singing talents and few of the girls and  boys, with no hesitation, came forward and sang beautifully! After the joyous singing we moved onto the most important part of the day - prize distribution. Divya, Vivek and along with few other volunteers who teach at Shamshiguda School also dropped in to help. Soon enough, we distributed the prizes for the winners and runner ups in the events organized couple of days in advance.
There after few more events like singing n dance programs one of the teaching faculty from school briefed the children about the library and  how the books donors has helped us out by getting various books to the students there and we received a token of appreciation from the Principal n chief guests attended for the event.

Soon after winding up the event at Shamshiguds we bunch of volunteers from here joined rest of the volunteers who were already gathered @ ZPHS Kukatpaly. I think Nischal would be the best person who can post the detailed event held in KP school better than me.
Before leaving we had a group photograph with all the volunteers and as a perfect ending to the wonderful event, Dharani, provided all of us with yummy treats. Once that was done and the library in its place, we all left the place with a content heart as well as a content stomach.
Some interesting facts about our brand new mini Library  —

Total number of books – 200

Books from our donors – 150 Dictionaries, 15 Atlas, Many story books

Books from our volunteers – 35(Many more still need t be segregated and categorized)

Books which reached us from various donors say that how eager everyone was to help out by giving their old books and donations,  and  the children must make the most use of them and here after its Volunteers responsibility to motivate children about how important books are to  them and how much reading English books can help them develop their language and vocabulary. It would tempt anyone to read at least one book from there I am sure. As if those books weren’t already enough, there were some charts and information posters too.

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” ~Charles W. Eliot

Welcome to newbies onboard and Special thanks to book donors and Friends of Sahaya for all the help and Happy 65th Independence day to all!!

A big thanks for giving kids a joy of reading...

Children with special needs only want what we all want - to be accepted.
We believe that a book is all you need to change the future of an less-privileged child and a big thanks to donors for giving kids a joy of reading...
Books like Chandamama, Secret Seven, The Famous Five, and of course the evergreen Tinkle never disappoint their readers and are always a delight. Its amazing how little kids find joy in almost all the simplest things in life, be it a lollipop or just a simple little story. The smile on their face is priceless.

Few days left to give kids a joy of reading by establishing libraries and engage children with books and get them onto the habit of reading.

Have you made your contribution yet? Donate gently used/new books to book collection drive..

Book collection drive continues till Nov 10th.

The SAHAYA Society's MY LIBRARY, book collection drive was launched at the AAROHAN 10 [Youth carnival organized by STED], from Oct 4th to Oct 10. This drive will continues till Nov 10th.

We think that we need to bring in people who are outside this whole project of sahaya.

One of the objectives and imaginative ways of doing this would be to establishing libraries and engage children with books and get them onto the habit of reading. We got to collect books from a variety of sources, we have to weed them out, and take what is useful and valuable and distribute it through schools to children who do not have access to it.

Contributions could come as children’s story books, coloring books or activity books. Such books will be distributed at schools. Other books, which are not usable or relevant to children, such as novels, old magazines, could also be donated. We will have those recycled and made into drawing books or notebooks for children.

The entire exercise of collection, segregation, recycling and disbursal will be completed in 20 days.

Sahaya is now associating with respective colleges of the volunteers with sahaya in the city. It would help collect a huge number of books.

Its time to write History. Again!

Try looking back into your childhood –   How about that instant smile which lit up on our faces at the  words “story-time”? Story -time meant an escape from math and grammar into a world far far away, with promises of excitement.  How many of us were  not tempted to look for magic beans and climb up our very own Beanstalk, or dream of dancing in a ball as Cinderella?

Or the time when Daddy read us a bed time story every night, before tucking us in? Our kids might not be as lucky to have their loved one read to them every night, but they sure do have us. For our bacchas, just the thought of having someone to read to them, sitting at their schools when everything in their text books just becomes a lag, is a welcome and pleasant change.

So,this year at Sahaya, our kiddos are definitely in for a booky- treat!

The SAHAYA Society's MY LIBRARY, book collection drive that seeks to source as many books as possible for children and raise the general awareness about the several million children who do not have access to Books.

The initiative will be launched at the AAROHAN '10 , on Oct 4th and go on till Oct 10. Anyone who wishes to donate books for children could come to the venue and place their books in the stall to be set up at the venue.

We believe that a book is all you need to change the future of an less-privileged child. So come donate one to the Sahaya Societies Book donation this year, and you could help guarantee thousands of less-privileged children the future they deserve.
