Career Guidance Program

Well it’s been a great year till now many great ideas turned from dreams to reality. And among them the one that stands out unique and exceptional would undoubtedly be the Career Guidance Program for class X Students.

On 21st February 2015, we conducted the Career guidance program for class X students at ZPHS Kukatpally. Harsha Vardhan Ayyagari, one of the senior volunteers has taken up the session with an interactive presentation, motivated many and to add on I can say that everyone present at session were motivated.

The presentation started with how to choose a career path, how to know one self also included each and every aspect that one could choose or take up after schooling to be precise after 10th class. Harsha along with Akhil explained briefly about all the opportunities that one has after he steps out of his schooling.

I still remember a girl named Soni came down to me and asked me what it takes to be a CARDIOLOGIST, well a small brain has started to think so much that actually motivated me to work more towards my career. And there was another who was so adamant that she wanted to only Polytechnic later followed by degree and then come back to the same school where she took this decision and help the upcoming students in their career. Her zeal and confidence made her lay the first stone towards her success.

To end up I must say that it’s been a great day and a great session as well came to know about many things and learned many things.

The will to succeed itself is a key ingredient of success.

Combining the joy of reading with the power of helping others.

We need your help!

Here's what you have to do: Support our Book Collection Drive

Do you have a stock of books not being used anymore, stowed away in some corner of your home? Donate these books for a noble cause, and support our book collection drive.

As a part of our effort to enable every kid to read, we started ‘MyLibrary’ in each of our schools, making books available for children along with regular fun activities. Kids select the books according to their interests. They feel empowered and renewed, and they begin to see new possibilities.

Since its launch in 2011, we established 3 libraries in 3 schools with 1500 books and this initiative has continued to expand, develop new resources, conducting regular reading activities, encourage children to read a wide variety of books and reinforce them to renew their reading spirits.

Where do we get books from?
We collect books from a variety of sources like colleges, schools, corporate teams and individuals who are the important partners in our work to help children discover the joy of reading.

Donate now
We are now associating with respective colleges of the volunteers with Sahaya in Hyderabad and establishing Book collection boxes in their college premises. It would help collect a good number of books by end of this drive.

You can help by donating gently used books or buy and donate through online (On request) and the categories of the books as follows:
  • Rhymes
  • Picture books
  • Beginner Readers:-Fun stories with short chapters.
  • Easy Readers:-Superheroes, popular characters

SWECHA 2K14 - a success story...

As there will be a lot of things involved to call an event or a plan to be a success, SWECHA 2K14 event too involved a lot more things to call it a great success.

To let everyone know about this success story, I would start with the planning of this event that started many days prior to the decided date. Firstly, a great work done by the core team to list out the events that can be conducted to the students, which would enlighten their talent of applying their knowledge and sharpen their skills to come out with a solution for a given problem and then finalizing the events to be conducted by taking all the volunteers' views into account.

For any event to be executed in a perfect manner, we need volunteers... considering this point to be the most important, the idea of turning up the volunteers to the event, along their friends has justified the cause at its best. As far as I know, the number of volunteers that turned for this event was really immense and made the task easier to execute.

Then on the most awaited day, Aug. 2nd… in the morning, with all the volunteers... senior volunteers with the experience of being a part of such events earlier, planning to make it even more effective and the new volunteers, with the excitement to do the  things in a proper way and to experience the warm welcome of the students with their innocent and pure smiles posing a question.. "What's new to learn today?"… All the Sahayans, determined to transform the day into an another memorable page in Sahaya's diary gathered.... then the senior volunteers not only trying to inculcate their tradition of handling things in such events to the new volunteers but also giving them the freedom of making the day even more special by performing the things in a better way with their own ideas. All the volunteers, having a clear picture of the works to be done in the given time, got dispersed to the respective classes.
Then there starts the day... the interaction with the students who would come to us with a lot of queries in their minds, the moment they know about the events to be conducted on that day...some students anxious to show their skill, some students doubtful about their performance and some with excuses... by convincing all the students that this day is one of the special day that gives them a chance to shine up with their talents, to know the way to pen down the things they already learnt and their ability to answer a question by giving it a thought. With a lot number of doubts from the students and equal number of explanations by the volunteers, we ended up the execution of the tasks and gathered for a meet... there the core team members addressed all the experiences of both senior and new volunteers, giving an appreciable invitation to all the new ideas from the volunteers and a detailed discussion about the performance of the students in the events, we called it a day.
The action is done and to check the reaction or in other words to know result of the creative planning and the perfect execution, we need to go through the performance of the students in the events, after finishing this, there comes a need to appreciate the best performers with some prizes and for this we saved the date as Aug. 15, Independence day. On that day, with all the volunteers present there, saluting our national flag and witnessing the celebrations in the school, followed by the prize distributions by the senior volunteers to the students, who made their mark in the events with the best performance. It was the day which not only let us to celebrate the joy of making the SWECHA event a success, but also a day which reminded our school days, where we found everyone in white uniform representing a special day, the days when we eagerly waited for our turn to deliver that 10 times by-hearted speech in front of the huge crowd...

We were done with the celebration in the school and gathered for a meet where in there was a discussion about the upcoming sessions to be held, the new ideas that can be implemented, a brief explanation about the events conducted in Sahaya in the past and their impact on the students, different views of the volunteers about the events… and a very special moment where probably for the first time, a volunteer surprised the Sahaya team with her special appreciation... an album which described about Sahaya… then we ended up it with a brief idea to handle the next session...

Then in the very next session, as usual I was welcomed with a lots of smiling faces which in turn carried an expression of asking "What's the new thing that you teach us today?"… I was overwhelmed with their response and satisfaction about Swecha event... a boy came to me saying excitedly, that he secured a first prize from his section and I could clearly find a confident and happy feeling on his face for the achievement. When they came to know about the plan for the day to discuss the question paper, I could find most of the students being very active and desperate to reveal that their answers were correct. I felt so happy to know that most of the students were able to remember the things they learnt in previous sessions and were able to recollect them very easily. The appetite of students to learn new things and their ability to grasp the new things which were taught to them, raised the spirit in me that I must come up with even more creative ways to provide them with all necessary knowledge.

I conclude my post by conveying my gratitude to the Sahaya team, especially the person who introduced me to Sahaya and all the people who inspired me to be a part of such a great organisation. Being a part of Sahaya, I would definitely try my level best to do my bit for the sign of improvement in the students.

Insights & Evidence: Empowering Successful Kids!

Our volunteers know how motivating it can be for kids to discover their "sparks" - those activities and interests that truly engage kids to be their best. Discovering those sparks can help students express their personalities.
We found that creative arts, athletics, and learning are the top interests that kids identify as their personal sparks through various interactions with kids in schools we visit. Other activities like reading, current affairs, nature, and curiosity to know new things also spark kids’ passions.  Kids need attention necessary to help them identify and nurture their sparks. Swecha events - a platform where kids get freedom of expression with joy.
Empowering successful kids
Helping kids identify their sparks, and providing them the opportunity to develop those interests, appear to be important additions to academic educational methods and help them achieve success.
Every caring effort of volunteers will be fruitful when students learn and reflect what they learnt. We always offer a challenge that’s well-matched to the child’s skill level, with clear goals.
One of the factors we identified in turning schoolers onto focusing on their spark is self-efficacy: students’ sense that they are competent and able to have enough knowledge of things happening around them, around the world. To encourage this in kids, we try to restructure learning so as to maximize opportunities for success  by building on skills that students required.

Swecha 2K14 events will help kids not merely be “okay,” but be the best they can be: confident, capable, passionate and thrive.

We thank all the volunteers for their efforts and the support in organizing Swecha event that develops kids do better on a wide variety of developmental outcomes.

!!!! 15 Feb 2014 !!!!

  • A unique day in the diary of SAHAYA.
  • A day SAHAYA stepped ahead to reach its goal.
  • A day that reduced the gap between students - volunteers - school management.
  • A day of joy and fun.

Why??  How??

“I learned many things in the ground that books didn’t teach me” - Sachin Tendulkar.
“Even an empty ground teaches more than a full book” - Sarvepalli Radha Krishnan.

These lines tell us how important sports & games are, in the process of learning. Today, even corporate companies recognized the importance of sports, especially team sports to develop the elements like team spirit, sportive spirit, fighting in odd conditions and many more and are encouraging employees to take part in team events.

SAHAYA, which always tries exploring and improving the talents of its children, will never forget or overlook such an important thing which helps children to achieve their goals.

SAHAYA conducted many events like JAM, Memory test, Drawing competition etc., to identify the talent of the kids.

Now it’s a similar kind of step by SAHAYA, that not only helps in identifying the talented students but also makes them resourceful . And that step is conducting a SPORTS competition. Even though it is limited to only one sport and to only girls this time, it is a good sign.

The day started for me with a surprise to see no volunteer in the school (ZPHS-KP) even at 10:00AM. After a long waiting other volunteers joined me. At around 12:00pm the arrangements started after taking the permission from the school management. Within no time the court was ready and the students were in the ground. Dharani (treasurer), who is good in volleyball, trained and shared his valuable suggestions and tips with the junior’s team (6th & 7th class). After the lunch break, both the teams were ready for the competition.

The game started with the words of encouragement from the principal, PET sir and Dharani. By 2:30pm, all the players, referees, score sheet (25 points) and audiences were ready for the action. The ball was first served by the senior team which got them 3 points in successive serves. Later the junior team opened their account and crossed the score of their opponents.

The match swayed in such a way that no one could guess who will win the match. At last, the senior team won the match with 26 – 24. The junior team fought till the last point but the result was not in their favor. With a small break both teams got ready for the next fight. Again a neck to neck scoring continued till 15 points then a girl from junior teams started to serve and brought 7 points in a row and everyone thought the game turned one sided, but senior teams bounced back when the serve was broken. Finally, the senior team won the second match also and emerged as a title winner.

Principal of the school presented the medals to the runners and  the winners and presented the winner trophy.

The boys came up for a friendly match where PET sir and Dharani also joined each team.  Sreeram and a school faculty joined Dharani’s team. The way Sreeram received the smash by PET sir and the blocking by the student got a good applause from the audience. Later, remaining volunteers also joined the play and had a very good time.

This event is supported by School Management, Sahaya Volunteers and a Team Lead from TCS through vol. Anuradha, who is playing a sponsor role in this event.

I end this post by conveying my heartful thanks to School Management, Anuradha and to all SAHAYA volunteers, who worked for making this event a success.

Strong team work and enthusiastic children

Hello Everyone.........

Generally in Sahaya we organize events based on the ideas from volunteers or from a team discussion. But out of the box this time we have organized ""Field Trip"" to DRK Engineering College on  request by a student from 9 class in Z.P.H.S Kukatpally.

Firstly as usual a wonderful effort from all the volunteers especially from DRK for their extravagant efforts in organizing this event successfully. Team work by the volunteers was the stand out factor in the whole event. Though they were given a short notice, they have organized excellently and made this one of the perfectly organized field trips in sahaya.

Secondly we'd like to heart fully thank the College management for permitting us to conduct this event.

I don't want to generalize the outcome of the event by quoting " Students were very happy,we could see happiness in their faces". The main intention of field trip is to give them an undercurrent encouragement and making them in getting exposure to the world which they will be stepping out.

Yes the children were happy obviously they would be and the fact which really made us happy was the response from students after the field trip.Initially when they were questioned on their interest towards engineering there were very less no. of students who answered it. But after the completion of field trip the response to the same question was excellent. That was enough for all of us because the purpose of their trip was fulfilled. The interest with which they were observing  labs and  the way they maintained discipline was very good

I would also congratulate the kids for being lucky enough to visit an engineering college even before their 10th  standard as many of us has entered after intermediate. This earliest exposure to the college environment would definitely create a mark in their minds and most of them take this as a factor of inspiration and continue further effectively.

Concluding,we collectively are very much thankful to the management of DRK for their continuous  support to the events of sahaya especially for the book collection drive that was recently organized in DRK which has produced a good no.of book.

On behalf of campaigning team we are very happy that one of the major events was completed successfully by the courtesy of a team work. Hope this support would continue further on the book collection drive which is going to be completed on NOV 10.

Team sahaya..... let us continue the same for the next nearest target (Book collection drive) as our work together as team would create wonders which is already a proven fact..

Sahaya Premier League-13

Every Sunday has something or the other that makes the day special, but quite often they are made special by the SAHAYA sessions. The previous Sunday (15/09/13) was altogether different from the previous Sunday’s and previous sessions, it was a combination of Brain Storming session & Sahaya premier league. It turned out to be the best combination ever, and to this combination rain added much more essence& value (priceless).

The SPL-13 started with the match between the home ground team KUKATPALLY KINGS & SHAMSHIGUDA SHERS; it was the match that I would never forget in my life. The spirit & the sportsmanship shown by the players of both the teams despite rain was Incredible & the captains of both the teams
(Sreeram.G & Divya.P) who stood out in the front to represent their respective teams deserve a standing ovation , the match was nail biting were the result was not decided until the last ball. SHAMSHIGUDA team had the upper hand in the end.

There were many things that one can discuss about this match, rather than describing them in this article it would be better that I start writing a book. (Semi-Colon Parenthesis)

Stats of the match: Kukatpally 49 Runs in 10 Over’s
                             Shamshiguda 50Runs in 9.4 Over’s

(Final result: Shamshiguda won the match by 1 wicket).

Both the teams showed the spirit & Competition which is quite often observed in matches between INDIA & PAKISTAN. One thing that I can say to the people who missed this match, you missed a life time experience.

And the second match of SPL-13 was between the SHAMSHIGUDA SHERS & MOSSAPET MUSKETEERS, it almost looked like a one sided match, Moosapet Team have dominated the match completely from the starting. The Innings by Sreeram Bhagavathula was worth watching and made him not only a great leader but definitely a great cricketer. His Innings showcased his love & respect towards the game of cricket.

Moosapet won the match quite sensibly & emerged as the strongest team of the day.
Few people who were unique throughout the day:

Best Team: Shamshiguda
(played 2 games Back to Back, despite the bad climate)

Best Catch: Tej from VNR

Best Performance overall: Ravi from Shamshiguda

Most Consistent Player: Prathibha (1st ball four, next ball out)

Umpire of the Day: Harsha Vardhan

Super Golden Duck: Rama Raju (Credits to Anirudh for his golden words)

Bowler of the Day: Naga lakshmi (Three wickets in One over)

Best Silent Supporter: Divya Pinky

Active Players of the day: Sreeram.G, Manoj & Om Prakash

Coordinator of the day: Srikanth Kothala

Sledger of the Day: Nischal Samji

Cheer Boy of the Day: Anirudh

Best Captain: All FOUR

Guest of the Day: Bharat Reddy

In the end it was SAHAYA who won the match

We care, We Educate & We have Fun. We're Sahayans

Adios,
Anirudh Kasibhatla

Thank you for being awesome

Mentoring Process at ZPGHS, Narsapur

I can say "life time opportunity for me to experience the Best"

We all know mentoring is not a new concept, but it only matters on how we look into this process. For me, mentoring process should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.

The inception of this idea was borne out from a discussion between our Senior Volunteer Pro G.Karthik and our Chief Editor Nischal on April 28th 2013, where it started off with "encouraging some of the upper class students (10th) to teach/mentor the lower class". By the time it was an impossible proposition, but when we started analyzing on its practical implementation, we got to know that children will get benefited with the opportunities tailored to the needs within their own circumstances.

It's a tough decision to start off our mentoring process with Narsapur school because of its distance decay with other schools that we'd adopt. However with all faith driven hope, we have experienced the "Best Moments" during this entire mentoring process.

On 3rd August 2013....

Super Team of  13 lead by Ms.Shivani

                                                       During Mentoring Process

We noticed that the "Communication" plays a vital role in this process, where 10th class children should have rapport with 6 & 7 class children  that helps this program run smoothly.

On 15th Aug 2013...

Here is the Beautiful Picture story....

We won't find any beautiful art than this...

Students were practicing to perform for a Patriotic song

                                                                          At 7.30am
                                                                         At 8.30am

In this process, mentor efforts will bring energy to the program which able to expand participation and increase overall support from the participants.

One of our Mentors Ch. Priyanka with her feedback on this process

                                                              Feedback in detail

Very simple feedback, but effective as well, she strongly believe in mentoring process which is about individual learning and growth.

                                                                       Super dance Show

                                                                       Full House

                                                                         Patriotism

The main intention is to make our Mentors to gain invaluable insight beyond their own education and experience. In turn we strongly believe, these mentors can inspire and guide all the Volunteers of Sahaya in near future.

We are greatly looking forward to have these mentoring programs regularly in all Sahaya adopted schools for the benefit of Children. We will be encouraged students with specific goals and expectations in their academic pursuits.

Finally, we would like to THANK each and every volunteer by name for their strong foundation towards Event Oriented Activities under the name "Swecha".

With Respects

August 15th celebrations - Swecha 2k13

I have been planning to write a blog post since SWECHA 2k13 event started . So, let me begin with the  SWECHA  event. Every year SAHAYA conducts various activities to bring out the talent of children.  This year for Aug 15th , Extempore and Quiz were conducted. Despite many hurdles, Our volunteers and children made this event a huge success.

Initially when we explained children regarding Extempore event on Day1 in Shamshiguda school, the participation of students was not up to the mark . Later when we gave them some tips on how to remember the topic while speaking , how the flow should continue from introduction to conclusion , 80% of the class were interested to participate. Some children chose their own topics to speak and asked us to provide the content . In a session, prior to the event day , kids were well prepared by then and they insisted us to conduct a mock event.  Seeing the fellow mates participate, other children also enthusiastically came forward for participation.

Coming to the Quiz , D.Kiran from 7th class & Ch.Sandhya Rani  from 8th T.M (Shamshiguda school) were out of our imagination in I.Q terms . In visual round, we din’t know some of the places , but these children at one go, revealed the answers. They were happy with the way events were conducted and insisted us to conduct  such kind of events.

I would like to specially mention about the SWECHA event conducted at ZPGHS Narsapur because in this school senior children mentored their juniors in this event process.

“ Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pitifully Poor Performance “

This was perfectly executed by Sreeram. One session took place prior the event conduction day  where Sreeram , Srinath ,Ramaraju played a key role in explaining the team mentors(10th class students) about the Extempore event. When Juniors have any doubt regarding the event , they would pose a question to the Senior where they would justify the answer by taking the assistance of books from Library. Shivani (10th class) took the lead role in mentoring the whole process .

Coming to Aug 15th , My day started by reaching KP school to collect the gifts for students who excelled in these events. Later reached Shamshiguda school , after flag hoisting ,Nagalakshmi gave a speech which inspired students to further participate in many more events.

Real celebrations started when I reached back KP school . Phani gave an introductory session to new volunteers . Later all volunteers gathered in a class and here comes the most awaiting part I want to share. Sreeram  came up with an activity for volunteers . Some chits were prepared in which some real time scenarios were posed as questions . This is one of the best session I had  in SAHAYA till date.

When Karun was posed a question regarding  the effective measures to be taken in maintaining the quality of a session  , He replied in his most modest way explaining that class can be divided into teams which develops a competitive spirit between them leading to the righteous results.

When its Anirudh turn , he chose a question to mention the various  volunteer  development programs  .He replied that Group discussions , Mock interviews can be conducted.  This question was perfectly answered later by Nischal saying that “ SAHAYA “ itself is a volunteer development program . In fact many volunteers directly /indirectly conveyed the same while sharing their experiences .

The most interesting question “ What are the steps to be taken for president role “ was posed to Srinath and he replied effectively that He would think as a volunteer, how it can be done and in the role of a student , what will be expected from volunteer and whatever decision he takes should be accepted by others too. He also mentioned that he was very thankful to Sreeram for making him as a decision maker.

In between these questionnaire , memento  are given to the best performers in every aspect . Special thanks to creative head Srikanth and Sanjana for making the hand made mementos .

“A problem well stated is a problem half solved “

Following this statement,  Sreeram asked Akhilesh and Santhosh to share their problems faced while conducting this event and had a discussion on how to prevent it further. Last but not the least, children's most favourite volunteer Ramaraju (birthday boy) shared his views on how to control an in-disciplined class. He quoted at last about his experience saying “Experience to be experienced “ .

On every such occasion , we come to know that session has ended by Sreeram’s single sentence “ Thanks to Dharani and Srikanth for their valuable support “ and Nischal’s announcement “ Assemble for a photo “ . :-)
Had the most memorable day in SAHAYA journey – 67th Independence day

Cheers,
Divya Panjala

Introducing Swecha - Celebrating freedom

Independence Day celebrations

Independence Day must be one of the most important days in the Indian history, But for me the 15th August 2012 Independence Day celebrations will be the most memorable event of my life.

My Experience:
On 4th August I along with few other Volunteers went to ZPHS gowdavelly, Being my first event with SAHAYA,  I was little tensed with the how the preparations are about to go, how the children would receive us? Everything was striking the chords in my brain but with the guidance of Mr. Eshwar everything seemed to go correctly.
The session started with the drawing Competition for all the high School Students. After the completion of session during collection of their Sheets I was really fascinated, mesmerized by their art.
A girl of 9th class drew ‘JANMA BHOOMI’ which even I didn’t remember,
On this note I would like to say,
‘In Sahaya We not only Teach but We also learn.’
The team work shown by them in their work was lacking in ours. So, probably I would say Team work, Time management were the two most important things I learned rather than teaching them. The Experience was really wonderful and the one with children was fabulous.

The above experiences have added much more eagerness and anticipation to the 26th January 2012 republic day celebrations. Expecting a lot of events like Skits, Role-Plays, Quiz, and Puzzles etc. I would love to volunteer in the events and if possible I would like to organize with my fellow mates.

I would like to urge all my fellow mates to take part and volunteer in the events because right from the childhood we had only known that Independence Day means hoisting of flag, distribution of eatables etc. that’s it, But that’s not what Independence Day means make the children independent i.e. to make them think on their own thus enhancing his life. Don’t make the child feel that he is intelligent make him feel that he is intellectual. Guide him in such a way that he guides and decides his future and that of the nation.

In the end I would like to thank the entire team of SAHAYA for believing in me and helping me in making this happen.

 THANK YOU.
Anirudh Kasibhatla

Here starts the book-e treet....

I hitched a ride with dharani n sreeram, all set to carry out books from all places to segregate them and I can safely say that we did it till  last night. We were able to manage to get 100's of various category books and around 150 dictionaries to launch a mini library today. As per plan dharani dropped me at ZPHS Shamshiguda on time along with books. As I reached n walked inside to be greeted by the children and after the usual “hello’s” and “hi’s” the children settled down in the ground where the Flag hosting was supposed.
By 8.30 Flag hosting program was started followed by HM sir's speech later followed by Chief guests speech. Which later followed by few nice  speeches and songs sung by kids interestingly in English n Hindi as well. Children showcase their singing talents and few of the girls and  boys, with no hesitation, came forward and sang beautifully! After the joyous singing we moved onto the most important part of the day - prize distribution. Divya, Vivek and along with few other volunteers who teach at Shamshiguda School also dropped in to help. Soon enough, we distributed the prizes for the winners and runner ups in the events organized couple of days in advance.
There after few more events like singing n dance programs one of the teaching faculty from school briefed the children about the library and  how the books donors has helped us out by getting various books to the students there and we received a token of appreciation from the Principal n chief guests attended for the event.

Soon after winding up the event at Shamshiguds we bunch of volunteers from here joined rest of the volunteers who were already gathered @ ZPHS Kukatpaly. I think Nischal would be the best person who can post the detailed event held in KP school better than me.
Before leaving we had a group photograph with all the volunteers and as a perfect ending to the wonderful event, Dharani, provided all of us with yummy treats. Once that was done and the library in its place, we all left the place with a content heart as well as a content stomach.
Some interesting facts about our brand new mini Library  —

Total number of books – 200

Books from our donors – 150 Dictionaries, 15 Atlas, Many story books

Books from our volunteers – 35(Many more still need t be segregated and categorized)

Books which reached us from various donors say that how eager everyone was to help out by giving their old books and donations,  and  the children must make the most use of them and here after its Volunteers responsibility to motivate children about how important books are to  them and how much reading English books can help them develop their language and vocabulary. It would tempt anyone to read at least one book from there I am sure. As if those books weren’t already enough, there were some charts and information posters too.

“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” ~Charles W. Eliot

Welcome to newbies onboard and Special thanks to book donors and Friends of Sahaya for all the help and Happy 65th Independence day to all!!
